"Beast" grown from Ajax academy

Brobbey youngest of four football brothers. Parents from Ghana. Half-brother Derrick Luckassen plays for Ghana in World Cup 2026.

Since youth, Brobbey seen as special talent for Ajax, Dutch youth teams. Won consecutive U17 European Championships in 2018, 2019.

Ajax academy coaches praised rare physicality. Former player John Heitinga described teen Brobbey as fast, strong, high jumper. Fans named him "Brobbeast" (Brobbey plus beast).

Age 18, promoted to Ajax first team. First career turning point failed. Advised by late super-agent Mino Raiola, striker refused contract extension, joined RB Leipzig free. Ajax fans angered, felt betrayed.

Leipzig move became setback. Competing with Christopher Nkunku, Andre Silva, Brobbey barely played.

Months later, returned to Ajax on loan. Revived instantly, scored 8 goals in 13 games. That summer, Ajax paid $20 million to buy back player who left free. Brobbey seemed stable, but biggest crisis started.

Months-long extortion

Late 2022, music festival, criminal approached Brobbey. Claimed he stopped Utrecht gang targeting striker. Demanded protection money. Brobbey refused.

Month later, bomb hit future mother-in-law house. March, bomb hit Brobbey car before Feyenoord derby. Attacks ruined striker form. Nobody in football knew why, not even Ajax bosses.

April, girlfriend sister car burned. Situation wild, Brobbey asked childhood friend to negotiate. Friend shot three times, barely survived.

Soon, extortionists demanded $170,000, threatened they knew his home. Het Parool newspaper reported Brobbey refused to pay. Mastermind arrested, jailed for attempted murder, weapons, 1.6 kg MDMA.

Ajax only learned of year-long terror when $170,000 demand came. Club offered full help. Brobbey chose to handle it alone, refused police cooperation.

Rebirth at Sunderland

Past crisis, Brobbey career rose.

First season after incident, he scored 22 goals, made 11 assists. Though not maintaining same performance next season, Dutch striker showed value as target man, often holding up ball, creating space for teammates.

Summer 2025, Brobbey joined Sunderland for $28 million total fee, scored 7 goals in 31 matches in Premier League. "I feel I grew up a lot at Sunderland. Met new people, had new experiences, learned much from them," he said after win against Sweden.

Standing 1.81 m tall with bulky build, low center of gravity, Brobbey is highly dangerous in duels. Ability to shield ball, hold possession, accelerate makes him often compared to Belgium's Romelu Lukaku.

New Dutch weapon

Brobbey's biggest strength is turning seemingly harmless long passes into dangerous chances.

In match against Sweden, opening goal was prime example. He received long ball, controlled it, held it up for teammate sprinting down flank, then rushed into box to finish play himself.

Cody Gakpo revealed this was tactical plan carefully prepared by Netherlands. Even coach Ronald Koeman, who often publicly criticized disciple for finishing, now changed view. "Before, he was not in best shape. Now different. Fitness is foundation of every performance," Dutch manager said.

Many football experts agree. They say Brobbey is not most technical striker, but real nightmare for defenders due to strength, speed, constant pressing.

Former striker Alan Shearer said three Swedish defenders "will have nightmares" after facing Brobbey. Meanwhile, Swedish daily Sportbladet described him as "sprinting block of concrete".

After years struggling with criticism, failure, even crime, Brobbey finally proves his greatest strength is not muscle, but ability to rise after adversity.
