Now, another European powerhouse awaits. "Shame big teams meet early in knockouts. Wish they met later to show full strength to world," said Hassan Bahara, Dutch-Moroccan journalist, writer.

From Amsterdam streets to World Cup stage. In 1960s, Moroccans migrated to Netherlands for better life. Two generations later, descendants choose Morocco shirt on world stage.

"Street football Dutch, Moroccan kids played in Amsterdam now on world stage," Bahara said. "Backstory gives match meaning no other opponent could bring."

For years, Netherlands benefited from Moroccan-origin players. Ibrahim Afellay, Khalid Boulahrouz, Adam Maher chose Netherlands. Morocco football forced to change approach to special talents.

Morocco built long-term strategy in Netherlands. Set up scouting, tracked Dutch-born Moroccan youth. Goal: help talents weigh options before choosing national shirt.

Strategy brought big results. Hakim Ziyech paved way. Next gen Sofyan Amrabat, Noussair Mazraoui, Anass Salah-Eddine became key Morocco players.

Morocco has three players knowing story best. Mazraoui, Amrabat, Salah-Eddine born, raised in Netherlands, chose Morocco at different career points.

With many young talents continuing to emerge at youth levels, Morocco's long-term recruitment strategy continues to bear fruit. The initiative, dubbed the "Afellay Plan" and inspired by the case of former Barca midfielder Ibrahim Afellay, has become one of Moroccan football's greatest off-pitch successes, adding another layer of significance to the clash with the Netherlands.

"It feels almost like a derby," remarked Jean-Paul Rison, a sports journalist in Utrecht. "99% of the people here will get along completely. My only concern is that some might exploit this match to fuel prejudice and hatred."

Concerns over off-pitch tension. Bahara understands the controversies that could surround the match. "I worry that some right-wing media outlets like De Telegraaf and far-right politicians like Geert Wilders will try to escalate tensions," he expressed.

According to Bahara, Wilders quickly posted AI-generated images on social media to provoke the Moroccan community.

However, the greatest hope is that once the opening whistle blows in Monterrey, off-pitch debates will give way to football emotions, creating a memorable World Cup match.

For over the past four years, Morocco has proven they are no longer a temporary phenomenon. The team recently won the Africa Cup of Nations, despite a controversial run to the title, while boasting an efficient scouting system and a youth development program that continuously unearths new talent. One of them is Ayyoub Bouaddi, the 18-year-old midfielder who impressed against Brazil and has drawn interest from giants like Arsenal and Man City.

Morocco no longer fears any opponent. Against the Netherlands, they enter the match with the mindset of a genuine contender for the summer's ultimate prize.
