How big is World Cup 2026 skill gap?

Stats show World Cup 2026 has more lopsided scores. Reason not just debutant teams.

After two group rounds, World Cup 2026 played 48 matches. Equal to entire group stage of World Cup 2018 and 2022. Data answers controversial question since FIFA expanded tournament from 32 to 48 teams: does World Cup have more one-sided matches?

Early numbers say yes. FIFA team expansion raised fear of exposing skill gap. Debutants like Curacao, Cape Verde, Jordan, or Uzbekistan are examples.

Germany 7-1 Curacao in Group E match 1 proved this. But few big scores do not show full picture. Gap trend is widespread.

After 48 matches, only 54% ended in draw or one-goal margin. Lower than 69% in World Cup 2018 and 62% in World Cup 2022.

Conversely, wins by three goals or more reached 27% of matches. Russia 2018 had 17%. Qatar 2022 had 10%.

Viewers watching World Cup 2026 matches see more lopsided games than last two tournaments.

Scores like Canada 6-0 Qatar, Sweden 5-1 Tunisia, Netherlands 5-1 Sweden, and Portugal 5-0 Uzbekistan show trend.

But scores do not always show match flow. Spain drew Cape Verde 0-0 and England 0-0 Ghana show team can dominate but not win.

Analysts use "field tilt" (share of passes in opponent final third) to measure control. High attacking share means one-sided game, regardless of score.

Opta stats: 27% of World Cup 2026 matches had team with 80%+ final third passes. World Cup 2018 and 2022 had 14%.

At 70% threshold, gap remains clear. 46% of World Cup 2026 matches had this dominance. Previous tournaments had 31% and 39%.

Some matches extreme. Canada controlled 97.4% attacking activity against Qatar. Spain 97.3% against Cape Verde. England 92.8% against Ghana. Turkey 91.2% against Paraguay.

Matches had different results. Canada beat Qatar heavily. Cape Verde held Spain. England failed to score against Ghana. Skill gap does not always mean score gap.

General trend clear: strong teams control matches more. Unfair to blame only debutant teams.

Haiti only lost 0-1 to Scotland, 0-3 to Brazil, 2-4 to Morocco, while keeping more possession than Scotland. Despite losing 0-3 to France, Iraq still defended effectively at times. Uzbekistan not completely dominated in matches against Colombia or Portugal.

Conversely, some experienced World Cup teams chose cautious play. Ghana almost gave up attacking when meeting England and still drew 0-0.

This shows gap not only comes from new teams, but also from how teams approach tournament. With new format, single point can make difference in race for knockout stage, making many weak teams prioritize mass defense instead of open play.

Whatever reason, data after first 48 matches reinforces controversial opinion when FIFA announced World Cup expansion plan. Biggest tournament on planet still has surprises and fairy tales, but gap between football nations also shown more clearly.

When group stage ends and knockout stage begins, number of balanced matches may increase as weak teams get eliminated. But currently, World Cup 2026 shows viewers more likely to see lopsided match compared to recent tournaments.
