As the big American sellers ran for investment technologies serving the wave of building artificial intelligence data center (AI), the need for Indium Phosphide (InP) also increased. InP is core material, without alternative products, in light-transference technology through fiber optics.
But this compound is a major obstacle in the ability to develop the fastest and most energy-saving components for the AI data centre, by Beijing limited exports from February 2025.
The U.S. Geological Survey says that China is the world's largest inducturist in acid, occupying about 70% of global production in 2024 "InP is one of the knots of the supply chain, which is suppressing the construction of AI data centers", Kerra Wang, research analyst at SemiAlysis, said.
In early May, Coherent sounded a warning of an ISP shortage. Their provider, AXT, the world's second largest InP base company, admitted "The InP export permit is the greatest challenge" facing.
Less than a week later, CEO Coherent Jim Anderson and the American business delegation joined President Donald Trump visiting China. According to Reuters, part of Mr. Anderson's trip was to mention the delay status of exporting inP from China.

AXT produced much of the ISP in China but received only its first export license in June/2025, while the amount of the order remained very large. According to SemiAnalysis, restrictions are creating the spread effect on the entire optical supply chain. Lumentum sealed the order to 2028 though increased the output four times. Taiwanese optical equipment manufacturers such as VPEC and Land Mark Optoelectronics also encountered interruptions of the InP supply.
Since the InP limited exports, the median price of a six-inch wafer inP has skyrocketed 250%, up to about 5,000 dollars. According to expert, Beijing's control of the InP indicated that the country was willing to expand its strategy of applying to rare soils, which once interrupted the chain of automobile supply, semi-translate and aviation, when competing trade with Washington.

Mr. Paul Triolo, the expert in mentoring Albright Ahmad, said China is developing a more sophisticated control kit, based on "devices". "Instead of banning complete products, Beijing can slow down or facilitate exporting compounds, semi-translaters, metals... upstream," he pointed out.

Coherent intended to double the production capacity of wafer InP at the Texas factory this year and double the power again at the end of 2027. But overall, production capacity increases very slowly, due to a new factory that typically takes two or two years to get into operation.
In China many domestic businesses quickly expanded production. As of April, Yunnan Germanium announced its investment of $189 million bad people (28 million) to raise capacity to 450,000 wafer InP single crystal per year. The company's 2025 annual report states that the amount of wafer InP output has increased 74%.
Guangdong Xian Dawai also launched a new project this year, the capacity for planning 40 tons of InP crystals per year, raw materials used to produce inducts for sale in InP. both Yunnan Germanium and Guangdong Xian Dawai are asking for export permits but there is no indication that Beijing will favor more domestic businesses. Therefore, there are units in the pre-visible field that feed the market in place.
