In the May 20 interview withCNBC, Bezos said that the 1% highest income in the United States is currently contributing about 40% of the government's total tax revenue. In the meantime, 50% of the people with the lowest income in the country make only 3%.
"I don't think this ratio should be 3%. It makes more sense to go down to 0%," he said. Billionaire explains that this "is a small amount of money with the government".

Tax Foundation quoted the latest U.S. Tax Service statistics (IRS) showing that the 50 percent of US's lowest income had tax incomes of nearly US$54,000 in 2023. Meanwhile, the richest 1% made at least 676,000 dollars up that year.
Bezos took, for example, a medical worker with a US$70,000 income that year. "We shouldn't ask a nurse to live in Queens to send money to Washington. They should have sent her an apology. Because that's really absurd," he said.
Bezos said he "sitted" the change, but did not give details of how legislators could perform. According toForbes, he is currently the world's fourth richest man with an estate of about $269 billion.
Tax Foundation said in 2023, the average income tax rate in 2023 in the United States was 14,1%. The top 1% tax payer suffered an average of 26,3%. This level is seven times the lowest income group in the country.
Tax Foundation said there were more than 76 million households of this 50% group in 2023. On average each apartment paid $913 federal income tax that year.
Bezos' speech is given in the context of some states controlled by the Democratic Party studying tax increase with the rich. Several federal parliamentaries have recently also proposed tax reductions for low-income people. Senator Cory Booker proposes that the first US$70,000 of general tax settlements will be tax-free. Singles and hosts will also have a corresponding decrease.
Although the low income group suffers lower taxes, their difficulties are more prominent in the high inflation context and the cost of living increases. The study of the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) at New York showed the closure of the funding in the General General Services for the low-income and median group that has created a clear division since 2023.
Over the past few months, the price of gasoline has increased dramatically due to conflict in the Middle East which has made the situation worse. Studies indicate the cost of petroleum over the gross income of low incomes is higher than the rich.
"I think what's happening now is like the story of two economies. There is a group of people in this country who live very well, but also a lot of people are struggling," Bezos concluded.
