Third Asian Team Eliminated From World Cup 2026

After losing 1-4 to Norway and 0-3 to France, Iraq need win against Senegal at BMO Field, Toronto to keep wildcard hope alive. At World Cup 2026, top two teams each group and eight best third-placed teams enter round of 32.
Iraq fail to surprise. Concede in 4th minute from Habib Diarra header. Rebin Sulaka get direct red card in 13th minute. Down to 10 men early, West Asian team collapse, concede four more goals in second half. Iraq have 31% possession, 6 shots, 1 on target. Senegal have 30 shots, 12 on target.

Iraq follow Qatar and Jordan out of tournament. Qatar finish bottom of Group B after 1-1 draw with Switzerland, 0-6 loss to Canada, 1-3 loss to Bosnia.
Jordan eliminated after two matches in Group J, losing 1-3 to Austria and 1-3 to Algeria. Jordan play Argentina at AT&T Stadium (Arlington) on June 27.
In contrast, Australia (second in Group D) and Japan (second in Group F) reach round of 32.

Four remaining Asian teams (South Korea, Uzbekistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia) still have chance. Iran second in Group G with two points, face decisive match against Egypt. Saudi Arabia bottom of Group H with one point, must beat Cape Verde to advance. Uzbekistan have zero points in Group K, must beat DR Congo in final match to stay in race.
South Korea play all three matches, finish third in Group A with three points, -1 goal difference. Must wait for other group results. Iraq heavy loss push South Korea down to 7th in wildcard race.

World Cup 2026 expand to 48 teams. Bring back wildcard spots for best third-placed teams first time since World Cup 1994. After group stage, 32 teams in round of 32 include 12 group winners, 12 runners-up, eight best third-placed teams.
If teams tie on points, FIFA use head-to-head record: points, goal difference, goals scored in matches between tied teams. If still tied, head-to-head criteria apply only to remaining tied teams.
If still tied, FIFA use overall goal difference, total goals scored, fair-play points (fewer cards rank higher), then latest FIFA ranking. If still tied, FIFA compare previous rankings until tie broken.
