Thủ quân Argentina vượt qua cựu tiền đạo Đức Miroslav Klose, người giữ kỷ lục 16 bàn từ World Cup 2014, để trở thành cầu thủ ghi nhiều bàn nhất lịch sử giải đấu.
Tuy nhiên, ngay sau khi bàn thắng được ghi, một cuộc tranh luận nổ ra về tính hợp lệ của pha bóng. Trong chương trình bình luận giữa hiệp của Fox Sports, cựu thủ môn Peter Schmeichel nhận xét trọng tài Amin Mohamed Omar đã bỏ sót một lỗi rõ ràng của tiền vệ Alexis Mac Allister ở giai đoạn dẫn tới bàn thắng.

Mac Allister đã đá từ phía sau khiến tiền vệ Áo Xaver Schlager ngã xuống ở giữa sân, trước khi bóng tới chân Messi. Nếu trọng tài thổi phạt ở tình huống này, đợt tấn công của Argentina sẽ chấm dứt và bàn thắng của Messi không thể xuất hiện.
"Tôi không nghĩ bàn thắng đó nên được công nhận", Schmeichel nói. "Hãy nhìn cách Argentina từng được hưởng phạt đền trước đó. Lautaro Martinez đã bị cầu thủ Áo đá từ phía sau. Mac Allister cũng làm điều tương tự với đối thủ trong tình huống dẫn tới bàn thắng này".
Bàn mở tỷ số của Messi
Cựu thủ môn 62 tuổi cho rằng đáng lẽ trọng tài phải thổi phạt cho Áo. "Đây là sai lầm rõ ràng và hiển nhiên của trọng tài", ông nói thêm. "VAR đáng lẽ phải xem lại và hủy bàn thắng. Tôi cảm thấy tiếc cho Áo".
Schmeichel là thủ môn Man Utd đoạt cú ăn ba năm 1999, và cùng Đan Mạch vô địch Euro 1992. Trong trận đấu giữa Argentina và Áo, ông là khách mời bình luận của FOX, cùng cựu tiền vệ Hà Lan Edgar Davids trên sân Dallas.

Sau khi Xaver Schlager ngã xuống, Messi có bóng và triển khai sang trái. Sau pha phối hợp bên cánh trái, Facundo Medina căng ngang vào cấm địa để đội trưởng Argentina đặt lòng một chạm bằng chân trái vào góc thấp, không cho thủ môn Áo cơ hội cản phá.
Bàn thắng càng có ý nghĩa hơn khi Messi trước đó bỏ lỡ cơ hội lập kỷ lục từ rất sớm. Ngay phút thứ chín, Argentina được hưởng phạt đền sau khi Lautaro Martinez bị chính Xaver Schlager phạm lỗi trong cấm địa. Messi bước lên chấm 11 mét nhưng không thắng được thủ môn Alexander Schlager.
Messi sút hỏng phạt đền
Đây là kỳ thứ ba liên tiếp Messi đá hỏng phạt đền trong thời gian thi đấu chính thức ở World Cup. Anh cũng trở thành cầu thủ đầu tiên trong lịch sử giải đấu bỏ lỡ ba quả phạt đền, trong bảy lần sút 11m.
Sau khi mở tỷ số phút 38, Messi còn ghi bàn ấn định thắng lợi 2-0 ở phút bù thứ năm hiệp hai với cú đá bồi. Anh nâng thành tích lên 18 bàn qua 28 trận tại các kỳ World Cup. Vì thế nếu không tính bàn mở tỷ số của siêu sao 38 tuổi, Argentina vẫn thắng và kỷ lục của Klose vẫn bị phá.
