Sau hai lượt, Messi ghi cả năm bàn của Argentina tại World Cup 2026, dẫn đầu cuộc đua Vua phá lưới. Đây là khởi đầu tốt nhất của anh trong sáu kỳ World Cup từng tham dự. Trước đó, tiền đạo Argentina đã lập hat-trick vào lưới Algeria ở trận ra quân, để cân bằng thành tích của Klose trước khi chính thức vượt lên bằng cú đúp trước Áo.
Messi cho biết toàn đội đã dự tính thắng hai trận đầu, nhưng mọi chuyện không dễ dàng. Anh cũng khẳng định Argentina luôn nhập cuộc với mục tiêu chiến thắng, và họ sẽ tiếp tục làm như vậy.
