Trận thắng Tunisia 4-0 giúp Nhật Bản có cùng 4 điểm và hiệu số +4 như Hà Lan, nhưng xếp nhì do kém số bàn thắng (6 so với 7). Thụy Điển đứng thứ ba với một điểm ít hơn, còn Tunisia đã bị loại.
Đại diện châu Á chỉ cần hòa Thụy Điển, ở lượt cuối ngày 26/6 giờ Hà Nội để chắc suất đi tiếp. Nhưng tại họp báo sau trận thắng Tunisia, HLV Moriyasu khẳng định chiến thắng đậm để đứng đầu bảng là mục tiêu duy nhất. "Chúng tôi chiến đấu với tinh thần đó, hướng tới việc ghi nhiều bàn thắng và giữ sạch lưới, như đã làm trước Tunisia", nhà cầm quân sinh năm 1968 nói thêm.

Thụy Điển thắng Tunisia 5-1 nhưng lại thảm bại với tỷ số tương tự trước Hà Lan. Đoàn quân của HLV Graham Potter có nhiều ngôi sao ở hàng công, nhưng hàng thủ đang gây thất vọng. Nhiều người hâm mộ tin Nhật Bản sẽ duy trì cách chơi hay như trước Tunisia. Moriyasu thì cho rằng việc thay đổi HLV khiến đối thủ gặp khó về chiến thuật và giúp Nhật Bản ghi được nhiều bàn thắng. Ông kiên định với quan điểm xây dựng được một tập thể ghi bao nhiêu bàn tùy thích và áp đảo đối thủ ở bất kỳ hoàn cảnh nào.
Chiến thắng 4-0 giúp Nhật Bản trở thành đội tuyển châu Á thắng đậm nhất trong lịch sử World Cup. Moriyasu cũng là nhà cầm quân Nhật Bản thắng nhiều nhất – 3 trận. Tuy nhiên, nhà cầm quân này không quan tâm đến các thống kê.
"Tôi đã phải chịu nhiều thất bại đau đớn, nhưng luôn bước vào trận đấu với tâm thế chiến thắng và chiến đấu hết mình", Moriyasu cho hay. "Tôi muốn cùng cầu thủ đặt mục tiêu cao hơn, xây dựng và thay đổi lịch sử bóng đá Nhật Bản. Tôi muốn tạo ra một kết quả để mọi người cảm nhận được sự trưởng thành của bóng đá đất nước tôi".
Hậu vệ kỳ cựu Yuto Nagatomo thì không ngờ các đàn em có thể thắng Tunisia 4-0. Nhưng nó chứng tỏ Nhật Bản mạnh và thật sự có thể hướng tới chức vô địch.
Đội nhất, nhì bảng F sẽ lần lượt gặp đội nhì và nhất bảng C - khả năng cao là cuộc cạnh tranh giữa Morocco và Brazil. Trong khi đó, đội xếp thứ ba nếu được đi tiếp thì sẽ gặp đội nhất bảng E là Đức hoặc nhất bảng I, với ứng viên số một Pháp. Vì vậy, việc tính toán vị trí để chọn đối thủ được cho là không có nhiều ý nghĩa. Lợi thế duy nhất của đội nhất bảng F là được trở lại thi đấu trên sân Monterrey ở vòng 1/16.
Điểm mạnh của Nhật Bản là tinh thần đoàn kết và sự ăn ý giữa các cá nhân. Họ là đội duy nhất đã sử dụng 22 trong 26 cầu thủ qua hai trận. 4 cái tên chưa ra sân gồm hai thủ môn là Yuki Hayakawa và Keisuke Osako, cùng lão tướng Nagatomo và tiền đạo Shuto Machino đang chấn thương.
Đội cũng gặp khó khăn khi mất Kaoru Mitoma, Wataru Endo và Takumi Minamino vì chấn thương trước giải, trong khi Takefusa Kubo đang chạy đua để có thể trở lại ở trận gặp Thụy Điển. Moriyasu cho rằng chấn thương là điều không may và gây đau đớn, nhưng tập thể này được xây dựng để chiến thắng với bất kỳ ai ra sân. "Các cầu thủ đang thi đấu với niềm tự hào, sự tự tin, và biết rằng phong độ tốt nhất chính là lúc này", Moriyasu cho hay.
