Bồ Đào Nha gây thất vọng khi bị CHDC Congo cầm hòa 1-1 ở lượt đầu bảng K World Cup 2026. Kết quả này khiến đoàn quân Roberto Martinez chịu nhiều sức ép, đặc biệt khi chỉ một ngày trước đó, Lionel Messi vừa tỏa sáng với cú hat-trick giúp Argentina thắng Algeria 3-0.
Trong khi Messi được ca ngợi vì màn trình diễn xuất sắc, Ronaldo lại bị chỉ trích vì thi đấu mờ nhạt và không tạo được nhiều ảnh hưởng lên lối chơi của Bồ Đào Nha.

Cựu tiền đạo Liverpool cũng cho rằng những ai lựa chọn Ronaldo trong đội hình cần chấp nhận đúng bản chất vai trò của anh hiện nay. "Nếu sử dụng Ronaldo, bạn phải chấp nhận lý do vì sao cậu ấy có mặt trên sân", Owen viết.
