Các quy định an toàn của Mỹ yêu cầu rằng nếu sét đánh trong phạm vi 14 km quanh địa điểm thi đấu, thì phải tạm dừng trong 30 phút. Nếu không có thêm tia sét nào trong thời gian tạm dừng, trận đấu có thể tiếp tục. Nhưng nếu phát hiện bất kỳ hoạt động nào, bộ đếm thời gian 30 phút sẽ được khởi động lại.

FIFA không chịu trách nhiệm về quy trình này và không thể bác bỏ quy trình của địa phương.

FIFA cũng không quy định về thời gian hoãn tối đa. Việc hoãn một trận đấu tại World Cup có thể gây ra những vấn đề nghiêm trọng về lịch trình, đặc biệt là ở lượt cuối vòng bảng khi hai trận mỗi bảng diễn ra cùng giờ.

Thời tiết cực đoan đã được FIFA cảnh báo từ trước World Cup. Kinh nghiệm cũng đã có từ khi tổ chức FIFA Club World Cup 2025 tại Mỹ.

Trận Chelsea gặp Benfica đã bị gián đoạn và kéo dài tới 4 giờ 38 phút. HLV Chelsea khi ấy là Enzo Maresca đã gọi đây là "một trò đùa". Trận giao hữu giữa Anh và Costa Rica vào đầu tháng 6 cũng bị hoãn một tiếng vì mưa lớn và nguy cơ sét.
