World Cup 2026 không chỉ mở rộng quy mô lên 48 đội tuyển, mà lần đầu tiên từ kỳ 1994 có sự trở lại của bảng thứ bậc dành cho các đội đứng thứ ba. Các đội giành vé đi tiếp từ vòng bảng sẽ gồm 12 đội nhất, 12 đội nhì và 8 đội đứng thứ ba có thành tích tốt nhất.

Ở lượt trận cuối bảng B ngày 24/6, Bosnia & Herzegovina thắng Qatar 3-1. Trang chủ FIFA sau đó xác nhận đội bóng đến từ vùng Balkan này giành vé dự vòng 1/16, mà không cần phải chờ đến khi toàn bộ 12 bảng đấu kết thúc.

Trong số 12 đội xếp thứ ba ở vòng bảng, 4 đội có thành tích kém nhất sẽ bị loại. Chiến thắng 3-1 trước Qatar ở lượt cuối giúp Bosnia & Herzegovina có 4 điểm cùng hiệu số bàn thắng bại -1, thành tích chắc chắn tốt hơn những đội xếp thứ ba ở các bảng A, C, D, I, và J, đồng nghĩa với việc họ sẽ xếp trên ít nhất 5 đội đứng thứ ba khác.
Ít giờ sau khi bảng B kết thúc, bảng A cũng ngã ngũ, với đội xếp thứ ba là Hàn Quốc chỉ có 3 điểm cùng hiệu số -1. Trong số ba bảng đã đá xong, Hàn Quốc là đội xếp thứ ba có thành tích kém Bosnia&Herzegovina ở bảng B, nhưng tốt hơn Scotland ở bảng C (ba điểm, hiệu số -3).
Ở bảng I, cả Senegal và Iraq đều chưa có điểm sau hai trận. Họ sẽ đối đầu nhau ở lượt cuối và sẽ chỉ có được tối đa 3 điểm qua ba trận. Còn ở bảng J và D, vị trí thứ ba đang lần lượt thuộc về Algeria và Paraguay, với 3 điểm sau hai trận cùng hiệu số -2. Vị trí thứ hai ở hai bảng này đang lần lượt thuộc về Áo và Australia, với cùng ba điểm.
