Do chưa đạt thể trạng tốt nhất, Yamal ngồi dự bị rồi vào chơi khoảng 20 phút cuối trận ra quân hòa Cape Verde 0-0. Trở lại đá chính trước Arab Saudi ngày 21/6, tiền đạo 18 tuổi lập tức tỏa sáng với pha dứt điểm cận thành mở tỷ số ở phút 10.
"Tôi háo hức được tập luyện và thi đấu trở lại vì đã xa sân cỏ một thời gian dài", Yamal nói sau trận. "Tôi cần cảm giác được chơi bóng. Được sát cánh cùng các đồng đội khiến tôi rất hạnh phúc. Giờ chúng tôi sẽ hướng đến trận tiếp theo".

Bàn thắng vào lưới Arab Saudi cũng giúp Yamal đi vào lịch sử World Cup. Yamal (18 tuổi 343 ngày) là cầu thủ thứ hai ghi bàn mở tỷ số tại World Cup khi chưa quá 18 tuổi, sau Pele (17 tuổi) của Brazil tại World Cup 1958. Tây Ban Nha cũng trở thành đội tuyển đầu tiên có hai cầu thủ ghi bàn ở World Cup khi chưa quá 18 tuổi, là Gavi trước Costa Rica năm 2022 (18 tuổi 110 ngày) và Yamal trước Arab Saudi.
Khi được hỏi về cảm xúc sau bàn thắng đầu tiên tại World Cup, Yamal không giấu được sự xúc động. "Đó là cảm giác rất đặc biệt. Tôi luôn mơ được chơi ở World Cup, và còn tuyệt vời hơn khi ghi bàn ngay trong lần ra mắt. Đây là một giấc mơ bởi ở kỳ World Cup gần nhất, tôi vẫn còn ngồi trong lớp học".
Sau bàn mở tỷ số của Yamal, Mikel Oyarzabal lập cú đúp giúp nhà ĐKVĐ châu Âu vào giờ nghỉ với lợi thế dẫn ba bàn. Đầu hiệp hai, Tây Ban Nha ấn định chiến thắng 4-0 nhờ pha đá phản của Hassan Tambakti.

Yamal cho biết màn nhập cuộc đầy quyết tâm của Tây Ban Nha là điều đã được chuẩn bị từ trước. "Chúng tôi có kế hoạch rõ ràng và muốn gây áp lực ngay từ đầu", cầu thủ sinh năm 2007 nói. "Toàn đội muốn giải quyết trận đấu càng sớm càng tốt, lý tưởng là ngay trong hiệp một".
Trong đoạn video được LĐBĐ Tây Ban Nha đăng tải trên mạng xã hội, tiền đạo thuộc biên chế Barca nói thêm: "Đây là bàn thắng quan trọng nhất trong sự nghiệp của tôi cho đến lúc này. Được ghi bàn trong trận đầu tiên đá chính ở World Cup, tôi không thể đòi hỏi gì hơn".
Trong khi đó, HLV Luis de la Fuente cho rằng những nghi ngờ dành cho đội tuyển Tây Ban Nha sau trận hòa Cape Verde ở lượt mở màn là không công bằng. Ông cho biết các chỉ trích đã tác động đến lòng tự trọng của các cầu thủ và trở thành động lực để họ phản ứng mạnh mẽ trước Arab Saudi.
"Không ai miễn nhiễm với những lời chỉ trích. Các cầu thủ cảm thấy bị tổn thương về lòng tự trọng bởi họ biết mình có thể chơi tốt hơn rất nhiều. Đôi khi những ý kiến đó khiến họ thức tỉnh và phản ứng tích cực", HLV 65 tuổi bày tỏ. "Tôi cho rằng việc nghi ngờ đội bóng này là điều hết sức vô lý. Chúng tôi đã có 33 trận liên tiếp không thua. Thật không công bằng khi đặt dấu hỏi về một thế hệ cầu thủ trẻ với tiềm năng và hành trình phát triển đặc biệt".

Đánh giá về chiến thắng 4-0, De la Fuente cho biết điều quan trọng nhất là Tây Ban Nha đã tìm lại cảm giác thi đấu và khắc phục những hạn chế bộc lộ ở trận ra quân. Dù vậy, ông khẳng định toàn đội vẫn còn nhiều việc phải làm nếu muốn hướng tới mục tiêu vô địch.
"Hôm nay chúng tôi thắng đậm, nhưng vẫn cần tiếp tục cải thiện", ông nhấn mạnh. "Chúng tôi luôn tự phê bình bản thân. Nếu muốn vào chung kết, đội bóng phải chơi tốt hơn nữa. Điểm tích cực là tập thể này vẫn còn dư địa phát triển rất lớn. Chúng tôi hài lòng vì đã lấy lại được cảm giác thi đấu, nhưng chắc chắn không dừng lại ở đây".
Ở lượt cuối, Tây Ban Nha sẽ gặp Uruguay trên sân Akron, Mexico lúc 7h thứ Bảy 27/6, giờ Hà Nội.
