Trump threatens 100% import tariff on many countries

Trump will impose 100% import tariff on goods from any country taxing US digital services.

June 26, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "Many European nations discuss digital service tax on US firms. Some close to implementation."

He declared: "Any nation applying such tax immediately faces 100% tariff on all exports to US." New tariff replaces all trade agreements, "implemented or signed or not."

This includes deal US and EU reached last year. Deal caps US tariff on European goods at 15%. In return, EU cuts tariffs on US industrial goods to 0%.

Trump previously threatened retaliation against nations taxing digital services, calling it unfair target on US tech giants. Last June, he ended trade talks with Canada over similar tax plan. Ottawa canceled tax just before start date.

US Trade Representative (USTR) threatened retaliation against France, UK, Austria, Spain, other European nations if they tax digital services.

Digital service tax targets tech giants like Meta, Alphabet, Amazon. All US firms.

Over 10 nations tax digital services. June 26 post, Trump only mentioned "many European countries" considering tax.

Before G7 summit meeting with Trump last week, French President Emmanuel Macron declared no yield to US pressure, no tax cancellation. Taxed services include e-commerce platforms, online ads.

Before departing for France summit, Trump warned US "has no choice" but 100% tariff on French wine if Paris keeps tax. Since 2019, France taxes domestic digital services at 3%. Decree targets firms with global revenue over 750 million euros (854 million USD), with at least 25 million euros from French market. Last year, French lawmakers proposed doubling rate to 6%.

Unclear what law Trump uses for immediate high tariffs. February, US Supreme Court rejected Trump tariffs based on International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Judges ruled act does not allow unilateral global tariffs.
