CAO TAN HOAI (HOAI TRAM CHIM) – A JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE AND THE DESIRE TO RETURN

Cao Tan Hoai

Full name: Cao Tan Hoai
Nickname: Hoai Tram Chim
Date of birth: February 18, 1999
Hometown: Dong Thap, Vietnam
Position: Central midfielder

Born in Dong Thap, one of the most respected cradles of Vietnamese youth football, Cao Tan Hoai showed his special qualities with the ball from an early age.

A natural central midfielder, Hoai is known for his tactical vision, ability to control tempo, passing range and powerful long-range shots. Those qualities helped him stand out in Dong Thap’s youth teams.

The golden generation of Dong Thap football

Some of the brightest years of Hoai’s youth came when he was part of a Dong Thap generation considered one of the strongest in the country.

Together with his teammates, he won national titles at U15, U17 and U19 levels across three consecutive stages. That run helped the Dong Thap generation earn recognition as one of the standout youth groups in Vietnamese football at the time.

Thanks to his performances, Hoai was called up to Vietnam’s U19 national team and was soon promoted to train with Dong Thap’s first team while still very young.

At that point, many believed the player born in 1999 had a wide-open path in professional football.

The first setback

But football, like life, does not always follow the path people expect.

While playing for Dong Thap U21, Hoai and several teammates were involved in a controversy that led to a six-month suspension.

It was a major blow to a young midfielder who had been building strong momentum. Yet instead of giving up, Hoai kept training quietly, maintained his fitness and waited for the chance to start again.

Steps outside the professional stage

During the period when he could not compete professionally, Hoai began playing in grassroots football. This was not the starting point of his talent, but a stage where he maintained match rhythm, fitness and the standard of a player trained in a professional environment.

He played for several strong teams in the Mekong Delta region and quickly became one of the most sought-after midfielders thanks to his modern football mindset, high-level experience and ability to create danger from midfield.

A memorable milestone came when Hoai helped An Bien FC earn promotion to the SPL. He also played an important role in helping the team qualify for the national finals with a series of impressive performances.

His powerful long shots, clean technical actions and ability to control games became part of his identity across grassroots football in the Mekong Delta and southern Vietnam.

With Chim Canh Cut FC, Hoai added another memorable chapter by helping the team win the Goal123 Cup. His standout displays also earned him the Goal123 Golden Ball award.

He also won a title and claimed the U23 Golden Ball with M&N FC, further proving his value in high-quality football competitions.

Those stages helped the name Hoai Tram Chim become widely known and respected in grassroots football circles.

Returning to professional football

After years of constant effort, the opportunity finally arrived.

Hoai was given a contract by Dinh Huong FC and quickly proved his ability. He played an important role in helping the club earn promotion to Vietnam’s First Division.

His consistent performances later caught the attention of Bac Ninh FC’s coaching staff.

From Dong Thap, Hoai moved north to join the team from the land of Quan Ho folk songs, hoping to continue chasing new milestones in his career.

The greatest pain of his life

Just as his career was becoming stable again, the biggest loss of his life suddenly arrived.

Hoai’s mother passed away unexpectedly.

The loss left him completely devastated. For a long time, he almost did not want to talk about football.

For Hoai, the person who had silently followed every match, encouraged him after defeats and felt proud of every success was no longer there.

Many people thought his football journey had ended there.

The return of Hoai Tram Chim

But one day, Hoai unexpectedly announced that he would return to the pitch.

His reason was simple:

“I want to keep pursuing the passion my mother always wanted me to follow.”

From that moment, he began training again with an 11-a-side team in Tan Phu while also playing in 7-a-side tournaments in Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong.

Wherever he played, Hoai left a mark through his quality, commitment and willingness to give everything for the team.

The Hoai Tram Chim identity gradually returned stronger after years when it seemed to have disappeared.

Cao Tan Hoai in action

A weapon called class

At 27, often considered a prime age for a footballer, Cao Tan Hoai is gradually finding the best version of himself again.

He still carries the sharp tactical vision of a midfielder who once represented Vietnam at youth level. He still has calmness on the ball and the ability to control the rhythm of a match.

Most importantly, his cold, decisive free kicks and trademark long-range finishes remain weapons that any defender or goalkeeper must respect.

After all the glory, setbacks, loss and repeated efforts to rise again, Cao Tan Hoai continues his journey.

Not only to play football.

But also to prove that passion, resilience and love for the game can help a person overcome every storm in life.
