At age 27, Mbappe has ample opportunity to increase knockout tally at world's biggest football tournament. He holds big advantage over Lionel Messi, who scored only 5 goals in 12 knockout matches despite being top scorer in World Cup history with 19 total goals.

Ronaldo Nazario played four World Cups from 1994 to 2006. Brazil reached final three times, won twice. Former Real Madrid and Barca striker played zero minutes at USA 1994, but showed full talent at France 1998 and Korea-Japan 2002. He scored three knockout goals in 1998, when Brazil lost 0-3 to hosts France in final.

In 2002, legend born 1976 scored four more, including brace in final against Germany. At Germany 2006, marking Ronaldo Nazario's World Cup farewell, he only scored in round of 16 against Ghana. Out of 15 total World Cup goals, over half came in knockouts: 8 goals in 10 matches.

Assist counting remains controversial, depending on statistical source. For example, Michael Olise not credited with assist for Mbappe's second goal in 3-1 win over Senegal, World Cup 2026 group stage. Transfermarkt records 42 assists for Mbappe with France, but counts winning penalties (fouled by opponent) or actions leading directly to own goals (like penalty Mbappe won against Argentina, World Cup 2018 round of 16).

Assist start points show three career stages, matching positions in three World Cups: right wing in Russia, left wing in Qatar, center in US. Natural instinct remains clear. June 2019 to July 2024: 12 of 23 assists from left wing. Zero assists in World Cup 2018 on right wing.

Other areas, three favorite assist types: short sideways pass while seeking shot at box edge to draw defenders, backheels (5 total) mostly one-two passes in tight space, pass after beat offside trap to force goalie out.
