Defeat means no Asian teams left in World Cup 2026. South Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan, Uzbekistan eliminated in group stage. Asian Football Confederation (AFC) still has Australia playing Egypt in Round of 32. But Australia geographically Oceania, not Asia.

First time since 2014 Asia has no teams in Round of 16. Twelve years ago, four AFC teams eliminated in group stage without single win. Australia lost three matches. Iran, Japan, South Korea got three draws total. Record of zero wins, three draws, nine losses made World Cup 2014 worst tournament for Asian football in modern era.

Counting only AFC members, World Cup 2006 also saw Asia empty-handed in group stage. Australia then belonged to Oceania Football Confederation (OFC). World Cups 1998, 1990, 1986, 1978, 1954 also had no AFC teams pass group stage.

Among Asian teams, Japan only one reaching Round of 32. Hajime Moriyasu team unbeaten in group stage. Beat Tunisia 4-0, drew Netherlands, Sweden to finish second in Group F. Scored eight goals in four matches, best team record in World Cup history.

Opta stats show Japan set record with 10 players contributing to goals, seven different goalscorers. Chance conversion rate 23.5%, second only to Netherlands. Numbers show team strength despite Takumi Minamino, Kaoru Mitoma injury withdrawals, captain Wataru Endo late absence.

Japan still failed to break knockout curse. Since World Cup debut 1998, never won knockout match. Reached Round of 16 in 2002, 2010, 2018, 2022, eliminated every time. Expanded format put Japan in Round of 32, but outcome remained same.

Martinelli winning goal against Japan

After Brazil loss, former players on Fox Sports noted gap between Japan and football powerhouses. Former goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel said Brazil have knockout experience Japan lacks.

Former midfielder Thiago Alcantara said Japanese football highly organized but lacks players with courage, decisiveness to make difference in key moments.

Former striker Peter Crouch said Brazil second-half pressure made goal inevitable. Carlo Ancelotti team found winner without extra time.
